What Is the History of the St. George Island Lighthouse?
The story of the Cape St. George Light goes back to 1833. The first lighthouse was built on the western end of St. George Island to help ships traveling toward the port of Apalachicola. However, ships approaching from the eastern Gulf had difficulty seeing the 65-foot tower.
After storms damaged the first structure in 1846, a second lighthouse was completed at the island’s southern cape in 1848. That tower lasted only a few years. A hurricane destroyed it in 1851, leading to the construction of a third lighthouse in 1852.
The 1852 lighthouse stood for more than 150 years. Its light was turned off during the Civil War to prevent it from helping Union ships. The beacon returned to service in 1865, and the lighthouse continued to guide vessels for decades.
Storms and erosion eventually threatened the structure. Hurricane Opal caused major damage in 1995, and continued erosion left the lighthouse surrounded by Gulf waters. On October 21, 2005, it collapsed into the Gulf.
Local residents and volunteers helped recover materials, including thousands of historic bricks. Using original plans from the National Archives and as much salvaged material as possible, the lighthouse was reconstructed in the center of St. George Island. It opened to the public in December 2008.

Today, the lighthouse stands in St. George Lighthouse Park near the intersection of Island Drive and Gulf Beach Drive. The park’s central location makes the lighthouse one of the most convenient things to do on St. George Island during a family trip.

The final portion of the climb is more challenging. Visitors must climb an eight-rung metal ladder and pass through a narrow opening measuring about 24 by 21 inches to reach the lantern room. Anyone uncomfortable with heights, tight spaces, or strenuous stairs should consider enjoying the museum instead.
Families should also review the rules before arriving. Children must be at least 40 inches tall and must climb under their own power. Children younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Food, drinks, pets, and bags are not permitted inside the lighthouse, and footwear is required.
Weather can also affect access. Lighthouse climbs are temporarily suspended when lightning is detected within 10 miles, so checking conditions before your visit is a good idea.
Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with elevated views across the island and Gulf waters. It is a perspective you cannot get from ground level and a great way to appreciate St. George Island’s narrow barrier-island landscape.
