Lots Of Warm Weather Events To Enjoy On The Forgotten Coast

It used to be that late spring and into the summer the only organized events our visitors could look forward to were the various 4th of July celebrations. No more. In recent years the spring and summer calendar has filled out nicely. Nowadays there are any number of fun things to do and day trips to take.

If you have kids with you, one of the best day trips around is a short jaunt over to Panacea just across the Ochlockonee River in Wakulla County to the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. It's a perfect day trip  for those rainy days that keep the kids off the beach.

The lab does two things really well. One they collect lots of different creatures and ship them off to colleges, aquariums, and medical research laboratories all over the country. Second, the part you're interested in, is that they have a nice educational center featuring all kinds of exhibits and touch tanks that will enthrall the kids. Oh, and the grownups will have a good time too! They're open seven days a week. Check them out at www.gulfspecimen.org or call them at (850) 984-5297.

The Veterans Memorial Plaza is home to the only replica of the famous Three Servicemen Statue that is also a part of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC. To have both the wall and the statue together is sure to be a moving experience for anyone who remembers the turbulent and troubled times our country went through in that era. To get more information about this important exhibit call 850 653-6044 or visit www.threeservicemenstatuesouth.org.

Saturday June 13 you'll want to stock up on sunblock and head out to the beach in front of the Blue Parrot for fun and flying fins as the Parrot hosts the St. George Island Annual SGI Mullet Toss. Yes, you heard me, the mullet toss.

Take a cooler full of prized mullet and let folks put a little altitude for distance under them before you cook them up and make a great smoked dip. Contestants come to the line get a good grip (usually with a nice coating of beach sand) and take a fling quite often with hilarious results. A $10 donation gets you a tee shirt and two mullet tosses. There are categories for men, women and children, and even a freeform division where folks build strange contraptions for flinging fish. They have to be strange because fire and explosion are against the rules. Sign-up starts 9:30-ish at the Blue Parrot deck and there will be lots of fun and prizes, not to mention flying fish that sometimes land in spectators laps! For more information call the Parrot at 850 927-2987.

And as a last fling of summer, be sure to be here August 1 & 2 as the folks in St. Joe host the 17th Annual Port St. Joe Scallop Festival celebrating the succulent shellfish for which our bays are so justly famous for.

As always there will be lots of food (the Lion's Club serves up a great scallop plate), activities for the kids, a great art show, and a ton and a half of great entertainment. The Gulf County Chamber sells frozen scallops for you to take home, and a great weekend is virtually guaranteed. For more information call the Chamber at 850 227-1223.

See? Didn't I tell you you'd have no trouble keeping yourself occupied! Enjoy!
